  • The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, launched the health assurance scheme: Ayushman Bharat - Pradhan Mantri Jan ArogyaYojana - at Ranchi, Jharkhand on 23rd Sept, 2018.
  • Health and Wellness Centre:- 
  1. Under this 1.5 lakh centres will bring health care system closer to the homes of people.
  2. These centres will provide comprehensive health care, including for non-communicable diseases and maternal and child health services. 
  3. These centres will also provide free essential drugs and diagnostic services.
  4. The Budget has allocated Rs.1200 crore for this flagship programme.
  5. Contribution of private sector through CSR and philanthropic institutions in adopting these centres is also envisaged.
  •  Health Protection Scheme:-
  1. The second flagship programme under Ayushman Bharat is National Health Protection Scheme, which will cover over 10 crore poor and vulnerable families (approximately 50 crore beneficiaries) providing coverage upto 5 lakh rupees per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization
  2. This will be the world’s largest government funded health care programme.
  • Beneficiaries - The Ayushman Bharat scheme will target poor, deprived rural families and identified occupational category of urban workers' families, 8.03 crore in rural and 2.33 crore in urban areas, as per the latest SECC (Socio Economic Caste Census) data.
  • PMJAY was launched in over 445 districts across 30 states. 
  • The insurance cost is shared by the centre and the state mostly in the ratio of 60:40.
  • PMJAY is portable, which means the beneficiary can avail treatment in any of the states that has implemented the scheme.
