International Non Violence Day
  • India celebrated the 150th Birthday of the father of the nation 'Mahatma' Gandhi.
  • 2nd October, is the International Day of Non-Violence, marking the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi was nominated on 12 occasions for the for #NobelPeacePrize.
  • In commemoration of the International Day of Non-violence, marked on Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary, the UN postal agency on Tuesday issued a new collection of stamps featuring artistic interpretation of 'The Knotted Gun an iconic global sculpture giving the message of peace and non violence.
Nobel Prize in Chemistry 
  • The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2018 with one half to Frances H. Arnold “for the directed evolution of enzymes”.
  • The other half jointly to George P. Smith and Sir Gregory P. Winter ”for the phage display of peptides and antibodies.”

Nobel Prize for Physics 2018
  • The 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics on October 2, 2018, was awarded to Arthur Ashkin of the US, Gerard Mourou of France and Donna Strickland of Canada.
  • 1. Arthur Ashkin received the prize for the optical tweezers and their application to biological systems.
  • Gerard Mourou and Donna Strickland were jointly awarded for their method of generating high-intensity, ultra-short optical pulses.

IBSAMAR-VI kicks off at Simons Town, South Africa
  • The sixth edition of IBSAMAR, a joint Multi – National Maritime Exercise between the Indian, Brazilian and South African Navies, is being held at Simons Town, South Africa from 01 – 13 Oct 18. 
New 840 Higher Educational Institutes enrolled in Unnat Bharat Abhiyan
  • Under “Unnat Bharat Abhiyan” scheme, 688 institutes selected in the phase-1 are involved in various activities aimed to enrich rural India. This includes field visits, house to house survey, identifying the felt needs of the rural masses, developing technology or process to improve their lives.
  • In the next phase, on a challenge mode, 840 Institutions have been selected and will be part of UBA 2.0. Out of these 840 Institutes, 521 are Technical Institutions and 319 are Non-Technical Institutions.
PM inaugurates first assembly of the International Solar Alliance
  • The Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, today inaugurated the first Assembly of the International Solar Alliance at Vigyan Bhawan. 
  • The same event also marked the inauguration of the second IORA Renewable Energy Ministerial Meeting, and the 2nd Global RE-Invest (Renewable Energy Investors’ Meet and Expo). 
  • The Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr. Antonio Guterres, was present on the occasion.
  • Prime minister emphasized that if the dream of “One World, One Sun and One Grid” is followed, uninterrupted power supply can be ensured. 
Cabinet approves MoU between India and Russia
  • The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Russia on Bilateral Cooperation in the Road Transport and Road Industry.
  • MOU between National Small Industries Corporation Ltd. (NSIC) - a Public Sector Undertaking of the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME) of the Republic of India and JSC-Russian Small & Medium Business Corporation (RSMB Corporation), Russia is also approved.
Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) sign Loan Agreements.
  • Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of India signed a $150 million Loan Agreement in New Delhi to establish a Global Skills Park (GSP) in Madhya Pradesh, the First Multi-Skills Park in India, to enhance the quality of Technical and Vocational Education And Training (TVET) System in the State and create a more skilled workforce.
  • Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) also signed $240 million loan for providing safe and sustainable drinking water to about 1.65 million people in three districts of the state of West Bengal affected by arsenic, fluoride, and salinity.
SIDBI launches a National Level Entrepreneurship Awareness Campaign, Udyam Abhilasha in 115 Aspirational Districts
  • Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), had launched a National Level Entrepreneurship Awareness Campaign, Udyam Abhilasha in 115 Aspirational Districts identified by NITI Aayog in 28 States and reaching to around 15,000 youth. 
  • SIDBI has partnered with CSC e-Governance Services India Limited, a Special Purpose Vehicle, (CSC SPV) set up by the Ministry of Electronics & IT, Govt. of India for implementing the campaign through their CSCs. 
Food Security Scheme of Orrisa Govt.
  • Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has launched Odisha's Own Food Security scheme on Gandhi Jayanti to cover 25 lakh people left out of National Food Security Act 2013. 
  • The beneficiaries will get five kg of rice per person, per month at a rate of Rs. 1 per kg. 
  • The pioneering #NaveenFoodSecurity will benefit lakhs of vulnerable people currently out of ambit of National Food Security Act. The state government will spend ₹443.5 crore per annum to support the scheme and Rs. 221.75 crore in current financial year.
